Disclaimer: alot of these quotes I feel like I heard while listening to The Dave Ramsey Show ...some of them are not and are just other thoughts and musings. Enjoy. Going to college to get a philosophy degree when your wife is pregnant with no idea of how you are going to earn a living when you get out is a bad philosophy. Term life insurance wont change your life, but it will change your death. --Dave Ramsey You can not serve two master cards. Too many people don't want a safety net, they want a hammock. Once you say, "No" long enough, you get to say, "Yes" to anything. The cost of rent is you doing what I say. Winning the lottery is like putting Miracle-Gro on your character traits. Sudden wealth is seldom good. Smarts + Discipline = Wisdom When you have no debt, something more than a financial transaction takes place. I started running my business differently. There is a different switch that flips when you are debt free. [And intend to stay that way] I can't get em ta.....its a pattern isn't it? With no house payment with no nothing, it doesn't take much to live. I love you too much to participate in your failure. Don't do stuff that is leukemia to your spirit. Everyone keeps telling you no, but you didn't stop. Just because someone else can't see the vision, doesn't mean you can't. This is about behaviors and behaving. I always want to see people growing even in your trade. Doing the exact same thing 20 years. I don't care if it is white collar or blue collar. If we can't pay cash for it, we can't do it. Giving is a monthly budget item, it's not a baby step. Ninety grand to cook? (amount paid to study culinary arts) You don't deserve squat unless you can pay for it. If you can't get a job, go make one. (go start a business, go knock some doors) All the interest I was paying on my house was making me sick. Learned from my cold calling days that you don't leave messages. debt = risk, more debt = more risk and even more debt = even more risk. EVERY cash transaction is recorded in my business, because I am not a liar. When you get rich, your problems don't go away. You just get different problems. (like becoming a First Counselor and taking care of 500 other peoples problems :)) Where do you want to be in 5 years? A verbal contract isn't worth the paper it's written on. Antique cars are one thing, but antique planes are another. When you get laid off with a paid for house, paid for car and money in the bank, it changes everything. If your going to win, your going to read. Those are the variables that will change the trajectory of your life. 9 bazillion computers for every 9 helicopters. Even if you get a job, it probably wont pay very well. You bought the dream of making $60,000 a year and not having any payments. It doesn't take much for walmart, target and 3 restaurants to steal your wiggle room. You would never say to a friend what your sister said to you. Humanize your selling strategy. Don't cold call, use 6 degrees of separation. Prepare to win. Micro decisions lead to macro results. I want to drive a Truck that you can put a Prius in the back of. I'm sorry for building a watch when you asked me what time it was. The four walls. Food and water, electricity, shelter, transportation, basic clothing Keep a half a million of liability insurance on your car/house. Money isn't important, but what it does is. Because it feeds your kids. You can't just be a taker, you have to be a giver. You know what? I am just really glad I am here. This is fun. Never again is Dave Ramsey going to find himself in a mess like this again. Reciprocity without keeping score. The decisions and choices you make put you where you are. You bought a 2011 Honda Odyssey while you were on unemployment? We are not going to write the check when you do stupid. Nobody has got that much money. Kind and firm. Pay stay. Don't Pay, don't stay. I'd rather have an empty unit than have someone that wont pay. I do not tolerate people paying me late in my business. You have a sales problem. On average the more people you help, the more money you make. (home builder vs software engineer) Help enough people and you don't have to worry about money. What does the wife of multimillionaire Dave Ramsey do on a Monday night? Watch the Bachelor. If it is to be it is up to me. I'm not a civil engineer, I'm not a landscaper, I have just owned over 1,000 pieces of real estate in my life. Most BMW's are driven by non-millionaires. I would not go into debt to go to helicopter school. Don't get in the habit of lusting for things you can't afford. 'So and so' let me down. That's because you were leaning on them. The biggest thing I have learned from [Dave Ramsey] is to not loan friends or family money. A part of winning is believing you can. Dave Ramsey is helping more people than all of the congressmen put together and I agree. I wish I could read 10 times more than I do. -DR Insurance costs you money to protect your investments. When in doubt, don't. Real boys buy their toys after their families needs have been met. (pilots license, house) You can do almost anything if you just keep at it. (dental school? When excellent people recommend people, they are usually excellent. I am a book junkie. -DR I haven't hit half of my goals on time, but I still hit my goals. ADD people are weak at details and routine. --Dan Miller You can't just have one cookie, you have to eat the whole bag of cookies. Look out at huge long term goals and work back to know what you are going to do month by month, week by week and day by day. I am not mad at the people living in LA, I am just not going to live there. I like Nashville. 46 years old and finished a marathon in 5 hours and 17 minutes. I am going to measure winning with money, by seeing if I have some. The FICO score is a false measure of winning. There is an inverse relationship between wealth and a FICO score. I need to know who your attorney is, so that my attorney can know who to contact. We don't borrow money. The answers to a lot of questions are found in books. If I gave you $100,000, what kind of business would you start? (small business consultant) If you make enough being self-employed then you can buy your own benefits. The more patient you are when you are looking for a house the better. I drove that [beater] car for 10 years one three-month period. Do you have a family? Ability brings security, not a job. Your security comes from your ability. I don't want to be on a diet, I just want to buckle my pants. I don't take a lunch hour, I take a lunch 15. I don't lend money to people, especially to people I love. The guy who can start a business is the same guy who can be a control freak. Just because I have some money doesn't mean you have any rights to it. All across America parents have abdicated their parental responsibilities. Step up parents and have a freaking backbone. Don't be a control freak, but step up. God loves a cheerful giver. I am always about the business of building wealth, because I have found its a fabulous tool to help people with. It's amazing that you can live without borrowing money. The problem with teaching kids about money is that it takes so much more time than just giving them money. Welcome to Parenting. What's valuable in our marketplace is knowledge. He wants to have everything yesterday. The guys that win in this life with their wealth are the tortoises not the hares. Unemployment is either 0 or 100% depending on who you ask. Debt-free-hope-filled people give more. My finances are very clean. I give people money and they give me stuff. He is 28. When do you stop breastfeeding him? No you should not buy your 28 year old son health insurance. You'll get better and make more money doing things you love. In America very few of us have any real needs, all we have are wants. Your feet are working, there's transportation, shut up. For some people not going on vacation is radical. We rocked your world. We don't have to go as far as blood and plasma. The preacher said "and now you are one" not "now you are a joint venture" you still clean his laundry right? Its OUR debt. I am spoiled freaking rotten now. We have got to learn to feel money again. Same purchase...same store....same counter....10 $100 bills. 1..2..3...4...5...6...7...8...9...10. Ouch I just spent some money! I try not do the same stupid things twice, because there are lots of new stupid things to do.-DR Don't choose lifestyle over kids. We took a lifestyle cut, a paycut, a slowdown-in-all-of-our-financial-goals decision for her to be home full-time with the kids, 26 years ago, and I look back and say that was an incredible investment. It paid dividends for me. #1 Your most powerful wealth building tool is contentment. I don't have to have that purse. I don't have to have that house, that car, eat at that restaurant. I don't have to go on that trip to be happy. This constant scratching and clawing for more and more is wealth defeating. When you raise your prices you are going to lose 20% of your business and thats a good thing. I'd rather do less work and make more money. That's not greed, its just the proper way to run a business. I am bipartisan in my approach to stupidity. Opportunities come from people, not from base knowledge. Maybe what we need to do is pass a bill through Congress for people to be responsible. If you are going 75 mph the wrong way--just stopping is a pretty big deal. The wealthier you are [or are going to be:)]the more likely you are to listen to talk radio. (especially Dave Ramsey talk radio :) ) Nobody in the organizational chart above me....other than God. 100% of the time, life doesn't go how we planned it. Giving: the ultimate investment. (get out of debt, get out of debt, get out of debt, gmat, gmat, gmat, gmat, go kart park, go kart park ;)) Discipline begets discipline. Finding your dream job is not an act of discovery, it is a process of recovery. What have I done in my life that I love doing? (reading, developing ideas, chess, basketball, collecting quotes) Successful people work their butts off, live on less than they make and invest the difference. With 18 year olds, you can visit for a minute, and then if they don't do it, then I force them to do it. I am most alive when I am teaching. Pick something to be excellent at, and do it everyday. Money goes towards hard working, honest people with good ideas that impose their will on the marketplace. Business is not that hard, all you got to do is love on your customers. (toy license plate, burger king hats, ramps, drive thru, juice boxes, cookies, monopoly money) What I do is, I don't borrow money. What I say is buy a home on a 15 year fixed rate mortgage where the payment is no more than 25% of your take home pay. You people who enjoy running are sick. Your bailout doesn't need a loan. People who are successful in any area of their life are intentional about it. Broke people don't need to own rental property. I grew up on Faulkner Drive. You can't mow over dandelions, you have to pull them out by the root. The way you know if you can afford something or not is whether or not you have to make payments to purchase it. Stupid is not illegal. Making it in life is a pain in the butt. Is that the source of the OWS anger? Our poor people in American are more wealthy the 70% of the people in the world. Small business is the definition of hassle. They don't call me Daddy here. (talking about his kids working with and for him) All I have seen tells me to trust the creator for all I have not seen. --Ralph Waldo Emerson If they sue me, they can have my copier. Very kind and very blunt. More is caught than taught when it comes to kids. To not fully apply yourself at any point in your life is not something I can endorse. Find some way to serve. I don't intend to quit. I intend to just die. There is a thrill that comes from serving. It is not how we are wired as a people. If I don't get paid by the 7th, they are getting an eviction notice the next day. These kids need to grow some.......ethics here. Look around and find out what needs doing. Excellence in any area of your life is weird. Very few people become wealthy before they first become content. Business can be a higher calling. You really do become who you hang around. It's always a good idea to build some wealth. It comes in handy for alot of things. -Dave Ramsey Rich people hate leaves, go to Home Depot and buy a leaf blower and boom, you are in business. Do I serve my child well by doing everything for them? Those of us who travel know its stressful. It's not as glorious as people think it is. I don't give a flip about adverbs. But later in life when I wrote it book it was good to know about them. It's nice to have some margin in your life. I bought millions of dollars of real estate in the last 12 months. The number one earning decade of your life is in your fifties. When your not smart about your education there is something oxymoronical about that. You need to be smart about your education. Elementary school shrinks as you grow up. You got to try some things outside of your comfort zone. Face your demons. A legacy of money, a legacy of character, of knowledge. We are going to change our family tree. It takes someone very healthy emotionally and spiritually to be happy about somebody else's success. The first book I wrote, I wrote between 10pm-2am. I would ride a bicycle before I had a car payment. Run 3 miles by 7 in the morning. Read the Bible from 7-730am. Its kind of like changing diapers, when you are in the middle of it, it seems like it is going to last forever, but then when you look back at it, you realize it was just a blink. I have no debt thanks to you. I have no money thanks to me. If you have money, you have options. A generous personality. Dave you need to be positive. I am positive. There will be an emergency some day. I will not quit eating, so I have to go running. Fanatical levels of integrity is the #1 trait of decamillionaires. (Even their competitors and their enemies) 70% of appraised value minus repairs is the most he will offer on a house. What is not started today is never finished tomorrow. -Johann Wolfgang von Goethe How are you going to surprise your customers today? It's not a leap of faith, its a step of wisdom. You do not want to be walking around in this life without an emergency fund. If you are going to have the pain, make sure you write down what you learned from the experience. That's why prospective buyers should stop focusing on the vague hope that house prices will jump from here and focus instead on the functional value houses provide for the money. In most markets, they provide enough of that to make buying a good deal. Steal it or don't buy it. Buy to flip or buy to hold? He buys to hold. A home is what you make of it, there is a house on every corner. Money isn't evil. It takes on the characteristics of the person who holds it. An idea unrecorded is an idea often lost. Our Heavenly Father is inordinately pleased when we are obsessively, compulsively, preoccupied with the needs of others. I have got lots of friends who are wrong about things. You get to see your children, which is kind of a neat thing to do. My business is here to serve people, not abuse them. Nothing is more common than unfulfilled potential. This money stuff screws with our relationships doesn't it. (with Martin you have $5 for a basketball game, $10 for a dinner, gas to and from the airport, food, etc, it adds up) The American dream as we have been sold it is a path to slavery. If you have a car and a house payment that match your income then your headed right towards slavery. It [the budget] doesn't get off budget, you get off budget. You live in America where stupid people can make a living. You'd rather have [your husband] make less money and have it be steady. That plan you are using...How's that working for you? doctors and lawyers are so smart, so educated....and so broke. He has no money and he has no character. You found a parasite kiddo, move on. I am so impressed with you, except for your choice in men. Have you ever met an ambitious pot head? The only hard work he does, is avoiding hard work. You can not microwave wealth. Wealth is a crockpot. Adversity causes some men to break and other men to break records. I get thank-you notes from people I have fired. No one makes good decisions when they are afraid or drunk. We have got 310 people who work like 700 people. I met with attorneys to see where I stand with the law. Not necessarily to sue someone. Would you borrow money to buy more furniture? By not paying your loan off that is essentially what you are doing. Would you borrow money to buy an iPad? By not paying your loan off that is essentially what you are doing. That's not an investment, my investments go up. If you leave exercise and healthy eating to chance, it's not going to happen." -Milton Stokes Doing a budget is always a nuisance, but so is being broke and borrowing money from your ex. START MAKING YOUR WIFE'S CONCERNS YOUR OWN. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The reason they check your receipt at Sam's Club is to make sure you spent at least $200. You fought to keep the FICO boat afloat, and you sunk. Be able to read the menu left to right. (see what you want and then look at the price) My wife calls my ideas Scheming and Scamming. Entreleaders manage with principles. Principles are not taught, they are caught. When they ask debit or credit, I whisper "credit" You don't invest with borrowed money, because it bites twice, it bites when you lose money and it bites again when you have to pay it off. I am a guy who brings a product to the market for a profit everyday. Wealthy people are almost always patient. I don't like it at all, but it is one of the required ingredients in the recipe. Turning your mother in law in for identify theft would cause a conflict... but so does her stealing money from you. The only security is your ability to get up, leave the cave, kill something and drag it home. Now we are really 'CHASE'ing something that matters. high side ratio: everything to income low side ratio: just the house to income Full-coverage insurance because just because its paid for doesn't mean you got an extra $15,000 laying around. High deductibles keep the premiums down. Put a bow on this section of your life. (finish your degree, pay off the car loan, pay off the student loans, be done with it) I can tell you what Dave and Sharon would do. We'd rent something cheap and save like crazy and pay cash for a little brick and mortar starter home, not a mobile home. "They were not only gifted, but they worked extraordinarily hard," he said. "They put in hours, and hours and hours. There are many gifted people, who without work and application of those gifts, get passed up by people who work very hard." Put them in business for themselves mathematically, but not legally. Getting out of debt like crazy is not a pleasant experience, but it does work. The deeper you will sacrifice the faster you will become wealthy. He has a lousy salary, but he makes a great income. (low base pay, high commission jobs at Dave Ramsey's office) The guy who rode in on a $1,000 bike had as much fun as the guy riding in on a $10,000 bike and when its raining they're equally as miserable. Pay cash for toys if you want to be a rich man. You need a financial plan that works in down economies and up economies. Children do what feels good, adults devise a plan and follow it and end up feeling better. Leaders are not born they are grown. Books are one of the ways I have gotten to where I am. The average millionaire reads books. We use a $5 bill for a bookmark. I am not going to spend my life being a rat in a wheel. Run run run and get nowhere. That's one of the whys. What would it be like to be free? Dream a little. Later you can live like no one else. There is a price that has to be paid to get from here to there. For that much manure, something has to be growing somewhere. one hat, as your boss, "You are fired." as a father, "I just heard you lost your job, how can I help?" Start handling your life in God's way and you will immediately start seeing results. Just because you didn't know the speed limit, doesn't mean you aren't getting a ticket. If you will deny yourself, you can have anything you want. Books are some of the best investments you can make. Pursue your dreams in such a way that they don't become a nightmare. Having a big FICO score doesn't mean you are winning financially. In fact it often has a negative correlation to winning financially. If the newness of stuff is what funds your happiness, your life will forever be empty. --Rachel Cruze You can buy a big car that will hold kids for $10,000. Broke people don't take many people to court. 4 things to teach kids/people about money 1. Work 2. Save 3. Give 4. Spend wisely 3 kinds of chores 1. love your mom and scared of your dad (acts of love) (don't do, you get punished) 2. special projects 3. chores created and attached money to (do the chores-get paid, don't do, don't get paid) You are making $140,000 and spending like you are making $200,000. I am the tortoise and everytime I read the book, the tortoise wins. Slow and steady wins the race. You want to know who is broke on the construction site? The guy with the nicest truck. Business done well is a life lived well. When you finance your mistakes, you magnify them. Are you bored with life? Then throw yourself into some work you believe in with all your heart, live for it, die for it, and you will find happiness that you had thought could never be yours. --Dale Carnegie I survive 90% of my bad ideas and make profit off the other 10%. The people serving the high end are more recession proof. The good news is they're in church, the bad news is sometimes there are idiots in church. I know some people with 8 figure companies with 8 figure expenses. "We have been in business in 30 years" (and your business is about to go broke) 3 to 5 times net profits after managers are paid. I am a giver, but my first gift is to my wife and my children. We are going to say thank you in a way that you can count in your wallet. Take a percentage of the profits and earmark it for the team. Split it into an HR fund and profit sharing fund. People that make our lives better are business owners. Being in business is a holy endeavor. treat as good as gold, whats best for client, 80,000 offering $10,000 solution. multiple interviews. talent not as important as chemistry. It is like God says, "oh look, that one has a clue now. Here is some more money." For me worry is a sin. I identify the perfect world and then go get it. Because you can always spend more than you make, you must develop a power over purchase and have a plan. Take the bad now, to have a great future. There is no passion to be found playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living. --Nelson Mandela I want to learn at the feet of the Master. Go work for free. You become friends with people and they see your excellence. And then you are first on their list when a paying job comes up. Go in there like a servant. This is a business transaction its got to work before it works. I don't think a dental degree is worth $400,000. -Dave Ramsey Anytime we want to increase our profits for the quarterlies...and you axe people and treat them like units of production and you don't treat them like human beings with dreams, fears and children. Was I going to do it by the scriptures, or was I going to do it like everyone else does it? The diligent prosper. Part of your success is because you have been working like you are a maniac. It's not just business, this is our lives, this is who we are. If you work for minimum wage from age 20 to age 70 you are by definition a loser. Let your career flow out of your passions and creativity. By sacrificing the little things, we have been able to live better and dream better. It frees your brain up to think a different way doesn't it? It's not the $5,000 [insurance] bill that scares me, its the $500,000 bill that scares me. You don't have to have a mortgage? That never occurred to me. If you're home, be home. Wherever you are be there. Perfection is Expected, Excellence will be Tolerated. (QA guy SLC International Airport) Maybe we need to arrange our lives to where we aren't relying on other people so much. I don't finance toys. That's how I live. Sacrifice to win. There is not a government program to fix your life. The next time you are getting ready to buy something with a friend. Don't. Your husband is a really really nice guy with no ability to say no. When you get married you have to be willing to take a bullet for your wife. I don't want your finances, I want your heart. So your not qualified to marry me yet. A car is a wealth defeating item. Nobody makes 6 figures without working your butt off somewhere down the line. I love them so much I am going to do for them what's right for them. There is nothing I want bad enough to go into debt for. Many of the things that are best for you in the long run are a pain in the butt in the short term. (dental school, paying cash for a home) When I added up the interest we were paying every month I couldn't believe it. The answer is always no if you don't ask. When your spirit leaves, you should take your body with you. (when you just aren't feeling it anymore at a job) Once I got to where I could by any car I wanted, it didn't matter to me anymore. Once it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter. We are a society that collects stuff. I've never studied the Bible harder than when I am leading the class. The discipline comes from the passion. Oh, so its the acquisition of degrees, rather than application of the knowledge. Instead of a rental house or a yacht, I am going to buy a PhD. We love you, our love for you is not diminished, but our respect for your intellect has. If I get laid off, I am going to go try to double my income. You got to get rid of the payments. I figured if I made enough, I wouldn't have to be organized. The secrets of the rich is that there are no secrets. If your not willing to pay cash for it don't buy it. Tax values don't mean anything. Look at Comps. They have no problem raising values...have a hard time bringing them down. PITI Working hard for something we don't care about is called stress; working hard for something we love is called passion. -Simon Sinek If you wouldn't buy it again today for what you could sell it for, than you should sell it. Jesus said that where your treasure is, there is your heart also and we need our hearts knit together. [hence get a joint checking account] (Spending some serious money on having children, labor and delivery, diapers, food, etc) This guy has fanatical levels of integrity. People who have high levels of integrity have a higher probability of winning, it just takes awhile. You don't need to worship at the altar of the credit bureau. You want something you can't afford. Got you past diapers, you are on your own Bubba. (kidding) It's really cold out there in real world, making minimum wage. (leverage over teenageers) If you work like no one else, later you get to work like no one else. Pay it forward, don't pay it back. One of the deals for getting control of your money, is growing up.
